Nystatin

WHAT IS IT?

Nystatin is a polyene antifungal medication that works similar to amphotericin B. It binds to ergosterol molecules in the fungal cellmemebrane, and causes prove formation (which leads to leakage of fungal cell contents). 

WHEN DO WE USE IT?

Oropharyngeal candidiasis 

WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?

Systemic fungal infections: not absorbed by the GI tract. 

HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?

Oral agent (swish and swallow). 

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS/TOXICITY?
ANYTHING ELSE TO KEEP IN MIND?

Not absorbed in the GI tract: it is admsitered as an oral agent (swish and swallow).
