OVERVIEW

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to

Initial Presentation:

Physical complaints:

  • Bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Breast tenderness

Behavioral complaints: 

  • Anxiety
  • Irritably
  • Mood swings
  • Decreased interest

Physical Examination:

Typically unremarkable (in isolated PMS)

WORKUP

Symptom/menstrual diary: patients are encouraged to keep a diary documenting the timing/nature of their symptoms. A period of 2 menstrual cycles is generally recommended.

  • Recurrence of symptoms 1-2 weeks prior to menses
  • Resolution during follicular phase (consent of menses/fet days after).
