Ovarian cancer refers to malignancy that involves the female ovaries.
WHY IS IT A PROBLEM?
Ovarian cancer is typically diagnosed in it slater more advanced stages (when there is more widespread metastasis of the disease).
For patients who are asymptomatic and who are at average risk for this condition (i.e. have no history of hereditary cancer syndromes) there are no screening tests.
For patient who are at risk (ovarian mass in post menopausal patients) the CA-125 biomarker can be assessed in the serum. This is a biomarker for epithelial ovarian cancer.
