OVERVIEW
Phencyclidine (PCP) intoxication is a self descriptive condition.
WHAT MAKES US SUSPECT IT?
Initial Presentation:
Agitated, combative, aggressive, and/or scared patient
Physical Exam:
Vitals:
- Hypertension can be a common finding
Neural exam:
- Nystagmus
- Increased deep tendon reflexes
- Status epilepticus
HOW DO WE TREAT IT?
Limit sensory stimulation: this medication disrupts sensory input, so those intoxicated on PCP can be extremely unpredictable with regard to any environmental stimuli. As a result, the best immediate treatment option for this condition is to limit stimuli directed at the patient.
