Basic Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Techniques: Order Sets

OVERVIEW

Order sets are similar to individual orders but often times are found in a separate section then individual orders and can be significantly more sophisticated. Like individual orders, a master of order sets can be incredibly useful to the user.

While it can be initially tedious to optimize order sets, they are incredibly useful to utilize in certain circumstances. Most EMR systems have some type of order set system which should be explored (image source).

This page includes tutorial videos in each of its sections (that demonstrates how to conduct these techniques on the UCSF EPIC EMR system). All of these videos can be found in this folder here.

HOW TO FIND AND USE ORDER SETS (INTRO)

Even just the basic act of how to find order sets should be something one is familiar with ideally before they are expected to place orders. While not overly complicated this can be nuanced.

HOW TO FAVORITE ORDER SETS

While it is great to be able to use the order sets, it can save more time to be able to favorite certain order sets so that you will not have to search for the correct version each time you need to use it.

HOW TO MAKE USER VERSIONS OF ORDER SETS (CUSTOM VERSIONS OF ORDER SETS)

Things can even be taken a step further, where one can customize a set version of an order set and then add this version to their favorites. This will save the most time simply because it will reduce the amount of clicks that will be required to place a certain set of orders properly.
