Fundamental Technical Skills In Interventional Radiology: Suturing Lines In Place

OVERVIEW

There are a number of techniques that can be sued to secure lines in place (such as tunneled catchers, etc) after they have been placed. The videos below show some of these techniques (some of which can be used together).

Of note the line that is being secured in the videos below is the Angiodynamics BioFLo DuraMax With ENDEXO Technology (UPN: H965103028080 REF: 02-808)

SUTURING NEAR THE EXIT SITE

This is a technique that is often used for a cuffed catheter. Essentially a vertical mattress suture (or an inverted vertical mattress suture) is used near the exit site of the catheter to close up the exit site, and then this suture is tied around the tube as well to secure it in place. Typically a dissolvable suture is used like a 3-0 or 4-0 Vicryl. This will dissolve in the time that the cuff will become incorporated into the tunneled portion of the skin. This video below shows this technique.

SUTURING USING THE MANUFACTURER PROVIDED SECURING DEVICE (2 AIRNOT SUTURE TECHNIQUE)

This technique can be used for any type of line that possesses these securing devices (often times HD lines, PICC lines, and other liens will have them). The video below shows one technique which sutures each hole of this securing device separately.

SUTURING USING THE MANUFACTURER PROVIDED SECURING DEVICE (1 THROW SUTURE TECHNIQUE)

This technique can be used for any type of line that possesses these securing devices (often times HD lines, PICC lines, and other liens will have them). The video below shows one technique which sutures both holes of this securing device together.
