Tibial Nerve

NEURAL PATHWAY

The tibial nerve arises from the sciatic nerve (it is it’s large medial branch). 

Sciatic Nerve → Tibial Nerve

FUNCTION

Motor function:

  • Foot plantar flexion 
  • Foot inversion 
  • Toe flexion 

Sensory function: sensory innervation of the plantar foot (sole of the foot). 

 

CAUSE OF INJURY

Injured at the level of the popliteal fossa:

  • Penetrating injury: 
  • Knee surgery
