WHAT IS IT?
Simvastatin (Zocor) is a statin medication whose net effect is to lower levels of LDL and triglycerides in the blood. It works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?
Preventing cardiovascular events
Dyslipidemias
WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?
Concomitant use with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors such as HIV protease inhibitors
Active liver disease
Pregnancy/lactation: this medication should only be used in patients who are unlikely to conceive.
HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?
Oral administration
HOW IS IT DOSED?
Usual dosage range is 5-40 mg once daily
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS/TOXICITY?
Severe liver injury is a rare complication with statin therapy.
ANYTHING ELSE TO KEEP IN MIND?
Liver function tests should be performed prior to starting statin therapy.
