Linezolid

WHAT IS IT?

Linezolid (Zyvox) is a antibiotic that belongs to the oxazolidinone class of antibiotics. It is a translation inhibitor that works to interrupt protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit and preventing the formation of the initiation complex.

WHEN DO WE USE IT?

Gram positive bacterial coverage including MRSA and vancomycin-resistant enterococcus

WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?

In combination with SSRI medications: this antibiotic has MAOI activity and therefore should not be used with SSRI mediations because it can precipitate serotonin syndrome.

Bone marrow suppression especially thormbocytopenia

Peripheral neuropathy

Seretonin syndorme
