Raloxifene

WHAT IS IT?

Raloxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator. It exhibits both estrogen agonist and antagonist properties in a tissue specific fashion.

  • In the breast/uterus this medication will ANTAGONIZE estrogen signaling
  • In the bone this medication will AGONIZE estrogen signaling
WHEN DO WE USE IT?

Prevention of breast cancer in high risk patients

Treating postmenopausal osteoporosisthis medication’s activity it the bone makes it useful in this regard.

WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?

Current/previous venus thromboembolism disorders: patients with a past history of conditions such as a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism should generally avoid this medicament (as its estrogen agonizing activity can increase the risk of clot formation).

HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS/TOXICITY?

Increased risk for venous thromboembolism: due to its estrogen agonizing activity this medication can increase the risk of clot formation in patients.
