WHAT IS IT?
Labetalol (Trandate) is a beta-blocker that also has alpha-blocking activity.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?
Severe hypertension during pregnancy (i.e. preeclampsia): this medication can be used to manage every hypertension during pregnancy.
WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?
Patients with bradycardia: given its activity as a beta-blocker, this medication will lower the heart rate, and should not be used in patients that already have a decreased heart rate.
