HIV Dementia

OVERVIEW

HIV dementia refers to a complication of the HIV infection. It can often be one of the first signs of HIV infection and is characterized by symptoms of dementia.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

This condition is caused by the direct effect of the HIV virus on the brain.

WHY IS IT A PROBLEM?

This condition can lead to brain atrophy and cognitive impairment.

WHAT MAKES US SUSPECT IT?

Initial presentation: signs of dementia

  • Cognitive impairment
  • Motor deficits
  • Behavioral changes

Mental Status Exam

  • Impaired attention
  • Impaired concentration
  • Impaired memory
  • Slow reaction time
CLINICAL WORKUP

Brain imaging (MRI/CT) can reveal the presence of brain atrophy.
