Methylphenidate

WHAT IS IT?

Methylphenidate (Ritalin) is a stimulant. It works to increase catecholamines in the synaptic cleft, (especially norepinephrine and dopamine). 

WHEN DO WE USE IT?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): stimulants like this medication are commonly used to treat ADHD.

WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?

After noon: this medication can cause insomnia, and patents should not take this medication after noon so as not to disrupt their evening sleep.

HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS/TOXICITY?

Loss of appetite and associated weight loss is a common side effect of this medication.

Tics: this medication can cause patients to experience “tics”.
