Radiological Anatomy: Pars Orbitalis 

OVERVIEW

This page is dedicated to covering how the pars orbitalis will appear across different radiological studies. It is an important anatomical structure in the brain.

APPEARANCE OF THE INFERIOR FRONTAL GYRUS ON SAGITTAL CROSS SECTIONS

The pars orbitalis can most easily be found by first identifying the inferior frontal gyrus (click on the link to learn how to identify this gyrus). As discussed on the inferior frontal gyrus page, this gyrus will have a characteristic “M” shape (referred to as the “M” sign. The pars orbitalis comprises the most rostral portion of this gyrus (in other words, the left “leg” of the “M”). As another point of reference, the anterior horizontal ramus will serve as one of the borders of the pars orbitalis and can be used to help identify its location. The image below helps demonstrate these anatomical concepts.

The images above are from a T1 weighted MRI of the head without contrast. One image is shown in the axial plane (top left) and two identical images are shown in the sagittal plane (middle, right). Both sagittal images are identical, except the right sided image has been annotated to show the location of the Sylvian fissure, the anterior ascending ramus, the anterior horizontal ramus, the area of the inferior frontal gyrus (outlined by the yellow line), and the region of the pars orbitalis (red shaded area). The shape of the inferior frontal gyrus is that of an “M” (hence the “M” sign) that is highlighted by the yellow line, and the most rostral portion of this gyrus is the pars orbitalis.
