OVERVIEW

This page is dedicated to compiling Step 1 study notes for the topic of inflammatory mediators. This page is likely disorganized as it was made in haste.

IL-1

Some facts to keep in mind:

  • Causes fever
  • Activates endothelium to express adhesion molecules
  • Induces chemokine secretion to recruit WBCs
  • Activates osteoclasts (important for osteoporosis)
IL-2

Some facts to keep in mind:

  • Stimulates T cells
  • Stimulates growth of helper, cytotoxic, and regulatory T cells, and NK cells
  • Granuloma formation
IL-3

Some facts to keep in mind:

  • Produced by T-cells
  • Stimulates the growth and differentiation of stem cells in the bone marrow
IL-6

Some facts to keep in mind:

IL-8

Some facts to keep in mind:

  • Mediates the accumulation of pus (by recruiting AND activating neutrophils)
  • Induces phagocytosis in neutrophils once they arrive
IL-10

Some facts to keep in mind:

  • Anti-inflammatory cytokine
  • Produced by macrophages and TH2 cells.
  • Limits the production of: IL-2, IL-3, and TNF-alpha
C3b

Some facts to keep in mind:

  • Opsonization
C5a
