Archive Of Standardized Exam Questions: Sinusitis

OVERVIEW

This page is dedicated to organizing various examples of standardized exam questions whose answer is sinusitis. While this may seem a odd practice, it is useful to see multiple examples of how sinusitis will be characterized on standardized exams (namely the boards and the shelf exams). This page is not meant to be used as a tradition question bank (as all of the answers will be the same), however seeing the classic “test” characterization for a disease is quite valuable.

QUESTION EXAMPLES

Question # 1

A 10 year old boy is brought to the clinic because of a 14-day history of a fever, headache, and yellow-green nasal discharge. He has had a cough during night time during these past 2 weeks. HIs 7 year old brother also has a cold. He appears to be mildly ill. In the clinic his temperature is 102.1°F, pulse is 100/min, respirations are 17/min, and a pulse oximeter shows an oxygen saturation of 96%. Oral examination shows that the posterior pharyngeal wall is erythematous and covered in thin gray mucus. The child’s lungs are clear to auscultation. What could be one possible explanation for this child’s presentation?

Explanation: fever + nasal discharge = sinusitis
