WHAT IS IT?

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a gram negative rod shaped bacteria.

CULTURE CHARACTERISTICS

Eosin-methylene blue (EMB) agar is used for isolation. 

Green colonies with a metallic sheen can be seen on EMB agar

MOLECULAR CHARACTERISTICS

Encapsulated bacteria 

Type III secretion system (injectosome) 

Adhesions/fimbria are present that help in the organisms virulence.
